What are the effects of Fluoride in the drinking water and is it safe to consume?

This is a question that has been an international hot button for many years. For the purpose of this article we are only going to discuss fluoride in the drinking water as toothpaste is a whole other conversation which disconnects with consumption when toothpaste is spit out after brushing not drank in volume. So is Fluoride safe to drink and what are the effects both short term and long term?

WHAT IS FLUORIDE?

There are many forms of Fluoride, for this article we will be discussing the fluoride added to drinking water which is Sodium Fluoride. Sodium Fluoride comes from a corrosive acid which is captured in the air pollution devices of the Phosphate Fertilizer Industry. Years ago the industry used to vent these gasses freely into the atmosphere however this resulted in severe environmental damage and human health complaints. Ready for some irony? Here is a statement from 2000, Dr. William Hirzy, the senior vice president of EPA’s Headquarters Union of Scientists and Professionals:

‘”If this stuff gets out into the air, it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the river, it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the lake it’s a pollutant; but if it goes right into your drinking water system, it’s not a pollutant… There’s got to be a better way to manage this stuff.”

Fluoride was classified as a drug in 2000 as a way to prevent or mitigate disease. All other chemicals added to drinking water is for the purpose of improving the water’s quality or safety. Something Sodium Fluoride does not do.

IS IT ETHICAL TO PUT INTO OUR WATER?

The simplest answer to the question of ethics is the very reason why the majority of Western Europe has ruled against it. Informed Consent. Doctors cannot force patients to take medicine without their consent and Fluoride was deemed a medicine. So to fluoridate entire communities is unethical in the realm of medical practice.

Also it should be mentioned that doses cannot be controlled. Some people drink more water than others which is relevatnt to the amount of fluoride they could be consuming as well. But how that factors into age, health or vulnerability is yet another factor.  As Dr. Arvid Carlsson, the 2000 Nobel Laureate in Medicine and Physiology put it:

“Water fluoridation goes against leading principles of pharmacotherapy, which is progressing from a stereotyped medication — of the type 1 tablet 3 times a day — to a much more individualized therapy as regards both dosage and selection of drugs. The addition of drugs to the drinking water means exactly the opposite of an individualized therapy”

IS IT SAFE

The interesting thing about Fluoride is that it is a non essential nutrient. Not a single biological process is shown to require fluoride nor is a deficiency related to disease which includes tooth decay. Fluoride disrupt many of our bodies biological processes. Including interfering with enzymes, proteins, growth factors, hormones, neurotransmitters, and has an accumulative effect which results in calcification of the pineal gland. Recent Harvard studies have linked it to lowering ones IQ. The most startling research on the subject comes from Dr. Dean Burk, medical researcher and cancer researcher at the kaiser institute and National Cancer Institute.
