Tiger Muay Thai stops “Shared Equipment” May 1, 2009; Rental Gear Available
Sawasdee TMT Guests,
Tiger Muay Thai and MMA training camp is committed to offering a clean, healthy and safe gym for our guests to train.
Therefore, under advice from Doctors and experts on “community spread bacteria” TMT will no longer offer shared equipment for training for the safety of our guests. This includes sparring gloves, shin pads, and ankle guards.
TMT will be offering rental gear and equipment for short-term guests @ 100 baht day. Equipment will be returned each day and sanitized for re-use.
Guests interested in sparring will need bring their own gear or purchase/ rent 16oz gloves and shin pads. (All sparring sessions require 16oz gloves)
We are sorry for this inconvenience to guests on budget, but the health and safety of our guests comes first at TMT. Those guests not interested in sparring can use whatever weight /oz glove they prefer.
TMT cleans our camp 2 X daily with anti-bacterial soultion and 10:1 water/bleach solution including mats, canvas, rings, gloves, pads, bags and all equipment.
However, we need our guests help to prevent the spread of bacteria infections like staph. Doctors, experts, and recent relevent articles have suggested not allowing shared equipment at gym facilities to prevent spread of bacteria.
We also need guests cooperation in preventing spread of bacteria which 50% of all people carry on their skin. The bacteria only becomes infectious when it finds a way into the bloodstream through open cuts, abrasions, etc.
- Please shower immediately after training using anti-bacterial soap. (available in TMT office)
- Do not hang dirty / used shorts, hand-wraps, vests, t-shirts out to dry in sun without soaking and washing with a anti-bacterial solution “Dettol” (available in office and local stores) or a minimum 10:1 water/bleach solution, or have your items laundered daily. Many guests have several pair of shorts, hand-wraps, shirts/ vests/ rash-guards.
- Please wear a clean pair of hand-wraps, shorts, shirt to every training session.
- Please clean your equipment daily wiping down with anti-bacterial solution / bleach/water solution.
- Please cover all open wounds, cuts, bites, etc as this is the first way the bacteria spreads to your system through contact.
- Please respect other guests and TMT policy on not training if you have staph, ringworm, or other bacteria infection and seek medical attention immediately which can be cured with oral antibiotics and antibiotic creme.
- Wear sandals in shower, steam rooms, sauna as these are areas where bacteria can be present. Doctors have suggested you can also contract staph from food poisoning. (Be advised to be careful eating from Thai carts and undercooked food)
Please see following links for more information on Staph, MRSA, Ringworm, and other bacteria which have become common in gyms, daycares, health clubs, and even athletic teams, locker rooms, schools, and hospitals.
Learning about staph and prevention
Causes and symptoms
Basic Hygiene for prevention
Too many guests arriving from other camps around Thailand have been spotted arriving with what they believe to be “rash” or “bites” and misdiagnosed by local clinic which end up being diagnosed as staph.
Tiger Muay Thai will refuse guests with a bacteria infection the right to train, and will refuse new guests that have an infection until medically cleared.

Chantel (Tiger Muay thai) defeats Lindsey, earns 2nd World Title Shot
Tiger Muay Thai and MMA training camp fighter, Chantal Ughi, the reigning WPMF, Patong, and bangla Champion defeated Lindsey (rawai) over 5-round at Patong Stadium on the evening of March 30, 2009, Phuket, Thailand.
In the long awaited fight, Lindsey showed up at least two weight divisions above Chantal (10+ kg) for the fight, but Chantal, a real Muay Thai fighter and champion shrugged off the weight disadvantage and used her speed, superior technique, and desire to battle her tough opponent.
After showing her boxing skills and peppering Lindsey in the first round, Chantal landed a clean tip kick to the chest that popped out Lindsey’s mouthpiece. Using her weight advantage, Lindsey leaned on Chantal for most of the fight trying to knee, but poor technique and her size led to her being warned by referee for fouling Chantal with knees to the groin.
In the later rounds, Chantal used her boxing scoring several jabs and uppercuts and her machine-gun clinch outscoring Lindsey 2;1 with knee strikes. Then in the 5th and most important round put Lindsey on the mat with a perfect tip kick and then ended the fight with a flying knee to Lindsey’s chest.
Lindsey drops to an average 5-4 while Chantal moves to 10-0 and will be fighting internationalt for the WMC and IMF World titles and then a sanctioned fight in the WBC and much bigger paydays, including a rematch against King’s Cup opponent Carly (Australia), and several other of the worls top female Muay Thai fighters.

Team MMA Phuket goes 1-1-1 at Art of War 11: Real Deal
Team Tiger Muay Thai and MMA Phuket clawed it’s way to a 1-1-1 mark at Art of War 11: The real deal in Beijing, China on March 28, 2009.
MMA Phuket’s three fighters put on a great event at China’s premier MMA fighting event. Art Of War 11 : The Real Deal featured a team of Chinese Mixed Martial artists against fighters from around the world including MMA Phuket’s Andreas Hesslebeck, Marko Huusansaari, and Berneung Sakhomsin.
Andreas faced-off against a tough opponent in Chinese fighter, Wu Haotian. The two warriors battled back and forth and looked like Andreas was close to victory near 5-minute mark when he scored 3 foot stomps to the face of Haotian, but the referee seeing the fighters near the ropes (No Cage), moved the action to the center of the ring allowing Haitian to recover and caught Andreas in a rear-naked choke at the 6-minute mark for the win. many thought this was one of the best fights of the night
Marko pulled out an impressive submission wn with a guillotine choke eight-minutes into the first round against Chinese new comer Liu Guo Quan. Marko cross trained hard for 2-months preparing for the fight with the MMA and Muay Thai programs at Tiger Muay Thai.
The main-event was advertised by rt of War as Muay Thai versus Kung-Fu and Thailand versus China, as Berneung Sakhomsin ( WMC World Muay Thai Champion in only his 2nd MMA fight) went up against one the Chinese best, Chinese Kung-Fu artist Dai Shuang Hai.
It was a pitched battle that saw Berneung use his clinch skills in a stand-up fight not even throwing a kick, and not allowing the Chins wrestler to get his ground game going. In the end, after one-10 minute round and one five-minute round, the fight is declared a draw. But you could consider this a win for the rising Thai MMA fighter Berneung as he took on one of China’s best MMA fighters to the distance.
